Ligament and Tendon Injections
Due to acute or repetitive trauma, ligaments and tendons can develop small tears and inflammation particularly at their attachment sites. These can be quite painful and limiting for work, sports, and daily activities. Rest and temporarily limiting certain activities can often resolve the issue. If not, you may need to consider injection therapy and possibly physical therapy. There are a few injection options to consider.
Sometimes just a local anesthetic such as lidocaine can help, but frequently a steroid such as cortisone, PRP, or prolotherapy can help. Deciding between these two options depends on several factors which your provider can help guide you through. The small tears and damage to their attachments may be visualized with musculoskeletal ultrasound which can also be used to better deliver the treatment to the effected area.
